Woodies win one, lose one vs. Astros
The Down East Wood Ducks split a suspended game doubleheader with Buies Creek Thursday night, defeating the Astros 4-3 in the first game and losing in a shutout, 5-0, in the nightcap.
The first game was made up of the final three innings of Wednesday’s game that was suspended due to inclement weather. The Woodies and Astros entered the seventh inning tied at 3, but the DEWDs pushed across a run in the seventh to earn the win.
Leody Taveras had two of the Woodies’ five hits in the first game and also scored two runs. Ricky Valencia, Yanio Perez and Brendon Davis each had RBIs in the victory.
Sal Mendez started the suspended game and went the distance, striking out two and facing the minimum nine batters in three innings to earn his second victory of the season.
In front of 1,791 fans in the nightcap, Buies Creek (28-18 second half, 65-50 overall) scored a run in the first inning and two each in the second and fifth to secure the victory. J.J. Matijevic, Osvaldo Duarte and Jonathan Arauz had two hits each, while Matijevic and Arauz had two RBIs each to lead the Astros hitters.
J.B. Bukauskas earned his first Carolina League victory of the season with six innings of three-hit ball for the Astros.
The Wood Ducks (15-32, 50-67) only managed four hits in the second game and were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
It was the final game for the Woodies against the franchise with the name “Buies Creek Astros;” the franchise will move to Fayetteville next season.
The Woodies travel to Lynchburg to begin a three-game set with the Hillcats Friday.
