SNOW HILL - Greene Central High School's varsity and junior varsity squads are taking their school spirit on the road.

The Greene County Schools Board of Education unanimously approved the Rams' request to attend the day-long National Stomp & Shake Cheer Competition next March at Virginia State University.

"Attending the competition would give our students in Greene County the opportunity to gain a unique cultural experience, build upon their creative and social skills, and engage in a new and enriching environment," said Shanequa Evans, head JV cheer coach.

Dr. Patrick Miller, GCS superintendent, requested that Evans secure a charter bus and inform him of the company selected.

Evans said the cheerleading squads are planning fundraisers to help cover the cost of attending the event. The registration fee is $450 and must be submitted by Dec. 15.

“JV is the team that originally decided they wanted to compete, and they have been the ones doing all the fundraising thus far,” Evans said. “When some of the varsity girls heard about it, they were interested in participating as well, so we had tryouts for those who were interested.”

The competition is normally held in North Carolina, but was moved out of state for 2020 by Powerhouse Spirit Competitions.

In other board actions:

a) Miller tabled a home school dual enrollment policy code for a first reading. He asked that the second reading take place during the Board's meeting Oct. 28.

b) The Board unanimously approved a goals proposal for Greene County Schools. Miller stressed key points that included a graduation rate of 95 percent or higher, a goal of $10 million in scholarships for the Class of 2020 in Greene County, and to sustain and enhance partnerships with local and state entities that address the needs of students, staff and community.

c) Barrow, Parris and Davenport, P.A., will handle the single audit for the 2018-19 fiscal year.

d) The Board approved a list of in-county transfer students.

e) Miller said the Board approved one resignation, two transfers for staff among schools, one corrected employment start date, nine substitute teachers, one bus driver and one substitute cafeteria worker.
