Hurricane Dorian continues to inch closer to North Carolina

SNOW HILL - Greene County administrators and emergency management personnel are watching and waiting to see just where Hurricane Dorian will strike.

A few surrounding counties have already declared a state of emergency, including Lenoir, Craven, and Duplin. On Tuesday, Greene County EMS Director Berry Anderson said storm preparation is underway.

"They really don't know which path it's going to take," Anderson said. "Hopefully, later tonight when I get more information from the National Weather Service, I can better understand what I need to do for the county as a whole to make sure we are prepared."

Anderson anticipates tropical-storm-force winds Wednesday evening. However, current rainfall projections aren’t expected to cause flooding or force residents to evacuate their homes.

If the need arises, residents can text NC Dorian to 898211 through North Carolina 2-1-1 to receive real-time responses on shelters, evacuation routes, road closures and more.

That number will alleviate emergency-related calls to 911 and allow first responders to assist those in life-threatening situations.

Greene Central High School has been designated as the main county shelter.

Greene County Schools will operate on a normal schedule until Superintendent Dr. Pat Miller makes a final decision, which Anderson said will occur Wednesday morning.

Residents are encouraged have an emergency plan, a hurricane kit and insurance papers on hand. Anderson also emphasized the use of Code Red, which sends out alerts about dangerous weather. Registration is available on the Greene County EMS Facebook page.
