Church selling 5,000 BBQ plates for member with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer

On New Year’s Eve, Stephanie Cherry was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer. Cherry works as a nurse for Community Care of North Carolina and attends 902 Church in Kinston. Stephanie’s husband works for DOT and they have three children, ages 14, 9 and 3.

Immediately following the news, members of her church and the community began an effort to raise money for her medical costs and care.

“She is part of our family,” said Debbie Hall, member of 902 Church. “Stephanie’s faith has inspired us to help.”

902 Church in Kinston has set a goal to sell 5,000 plates to help with Cherry’s care. The fundraiser will be held at the Deep Run Fire Department on March 6. The cost of the plates are $8 and will offer the choice of BBQ or chicken. All proceeds go directly to help the families medical bills and recovery.

Meals have been provided to the family since Stephanie’s first surgery in January.

“This deserving hardworking family should not have to fight this alone,” said Hall.

On Thursday, March 5 there will be a Potato Peeling Party at the Deep Run Fire Department at 8:30 am. Any volunteers should bring their own peeler and pan.

On Friday, March 6, the plates will be distributed throughout the community. They will deliver on orders of 20 or more plates.

Other local churches and merchants have joined in the effort to help the Cherry family. With over 800 plates pre-sold, the fundraiser has grown into an event with the need of more volunteers.

“We need a lot of help trying to put everything together,” said Brandon Rouse, a member of 902 Church.

902 Church is accepting donations on behalf of the Cherry family through the church’s website. Volunteers interested in helping can contact the church for further information.
