Multiple family members report a COVID-19 case at Kinston's VA home

Here’s a message to family members of the North Carolina State Veterans Home received late this morning:

“COVID-19 Update- North Carolina State Veterans Home- Kinston Families: This message is to notify you that a patient tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) at our North Carolina State Veterans Home- Kinston. This patient is no longer located in the center. Enhanced infection control protocols are being followed, staff members are utilizing appropriate protective equipment and we have increased the frequency of our cleaning procedures.

“We are closely monitoring our other patients for any signs and symptoms of respiratory issues and, as you are aware, we have ceased visitation, communal activities, and continue to actively screen our staff prior to their entry to the center. Additionally, the facility is restricting staff to essential personnel. Only those who have been trained in infection control protocols developed by public health officials are permitted to work in the facility. We continue to communicate to staff that they should avoid contact with those who are sick and consult with a physician if they have any symptoms or do not feel well.

“We will continue to monitor this issue and its effects on our organization as we follow the latest public health guidance. Our Emergency Operations Center team of dedicated health care professionals is available if you have questions about our protocols.”

According to family members of three separate residents at the Kinston-based North Carolina State Veterans Home, there is at least one positive COVID-19 case there. One family reports they received a phone call from Human Resources last night as notification of the case.
