Hourly Rate: $12.33

POSITION SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs scheduling and communication scheduling, routing and dispatching duties; operates a variety of communication equipment, including two-way radio, telephone, scheduling software; creates, maintains and monitors computerized driver manifests/schedules; and responds to requests for service and provides a variety of information to passengers and the general public. Employee may be called upon in case of disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Lenoir County. This service, if required, will take precedence over duties described in this position as directed by the Director of Transportation, Operations Manager and/or Administrative Assistant. This position is a non-exempt position as required by the Fair Labor Standard Act, as amended.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: High school graduate (or equivalent) or demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions. Experience in transit dispatching, clerical and communication work preferred, but will consider applicant who demonstrates strong knowledge and ability to perform required tasks. An employee in this class performs a variety of duties related to the delivery of public and human service transportation services. Such duties involve the use of a calculator, personal computer, mainframe computer terminal, printer, fax machine, telephone, and audio radio communication equipment. Decisions involve selecting correct funding source for passengers, assignment of passengers to appropriate routes and assignment of appropriate vehicles to routes. The employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in performing a variety of duties. Considerable confidence and sensitivity are required interacting with the public in obtaining all necessary information from persons requesting services. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Operations Manager and/or Director and is subject to review through observation of work and periodic performance evaluations. Employee must possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License and must be familiar with Lenoir County roads, streets and municipalities. A criminal background check will be conducted prior to offering position to a candidate. This position is subject to pre-employment, random, post-accident and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Transportation Administration guidelines and local policy.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
• This position is a part time position, working 20 hours per week. Hours of work shall be flexible and shall be determined by department demands.
• This position is required to be on-call to ensure adequate dispatch coverage for Drivers. This may be accomplished from the employee’s home or from the work site. The on-call coverage may also require that employees in this position be required to come to the work site and allow maintenance/repair vendors access to the transit vehicles. On call coverage may also include coming to the Lenoir County Transit facilities or in the field to assist drivers with vehicles that may not be operational or mechanical failure. On call coverage time will be compensated with two hours on call pay in addition to any time worked and travel time during the on-call schedule for official Lenoir County Transit business.
• During periods of driver shortages, natural disasters or other extreme emergencies, this employee may be subject to operating non-CDL transit vehicles.
