KHS Student Governement Association delivers to Friends of the Homeless
The Student Government Association (SGA) at Kinston High School delivered clothing and hygiene items to the Friends of the Homeless Shelter in Kinston.
“The best thing about this project is that it was student ideas and student led,” said Kinston High School Principal Kellan Bryant.
Student Government President Hailey Rochelle was worried about the homeless because it’s getting cold outside and it’s the holiday season.
“A lot of them may not have a family or anyone to take the initiative to do something for them,” said Rochelle. “I wanted to do something that involved other people to help.”
It was an effort that went beyond the student government. “We were able to involve parents, several staff members,” said Assistant Principal and SGA Advisor Celicia Milford.
The group advertised and marketed on social media in addition to posting fliers around the school. The SGA received a tour and learned a few historical facts, functions, and logistics of the shelter. The SGA and the Friends of the Homeless Shelter in Kinston discussed a partnership for future ways to help.
“That’s what our community is about,” said Bryant. “We want to build student leaders and we have one in Hailey and other members of our student government who really want to spread positivity and do community service things that benefit other people.”
