Perdue Scholarship Awarded to Tucker Williams of Grifton, N.C.

Tucker Williams, son of Brad and Cathy Williams of Grifton, N.C. , was awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation, the charitable giving arm of Perdue Farms.

He received one of 15 scholarships given this year to children of Perdue associates and independent contract farmers. Winners were selected based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities and community involvement.

Tucker will attend East Carolina University to pursue a degree in engineering. He graduated sixth in his class at Greene Central High School with a grade-point average of 3.96.

Tucker was on the varsity boys’ tennis and basketball teams. He was involved in the Greene County Tennis Association for more than eight years as a court monitor for multiple tournaments and was tournament director. Tucker assembled 12 benches for Greene County Schools’ tennis courts and worked in concessions for tournaments and games.

He was very involved in Greene County Special Olympics, coordinating tennis and organizing stations for tennis play for grades four through 12. Tucker taught tennis to students with disabilities, headed the athletes’ awards ceremony and was an Athlete Buddy for several children.

Tucker sees himself as a problem-solver with a future in mechanical or electrical engineering.

“My greatest goal in life is to become an engineer who specializes in solving difficult problems for a large corporation or a small business,” he said. “I aim to become someone who is looked upon as knowledgeable in many fields while helping those in need of assistance. I desire to design, repair and maintain machines in a workplace to help keep a company or business running smoothly.”

While he believes he is adaptable to many environments, Tucker would like to live in a small town, helping his community.

“While I want to work in a business setting repairing machinery or problem solving, I also want to offer my services to my community by improving areas that are populated,” he said. “Parks, playgrounds and independent contracts with schools or office buildings would be my proficiency.

“Upon seeing some of the difficulties that Eastern North Carolina has to deal with, I have wanted to stay in the populated towns around my home,” he said.

Tucker has developed a moral philosophy that guides him. “If the hard work is worth the reward, then there are no boundaries,” he said.
