Mike Parker: ‘Wings Over the Neuse’ takes flight Friday
This year marks the 13th consecutive year the CSS Neuse Foundation has hosted “Wings Over the Neuse,” the foundation’s major fundraiser.
“This year was a struggle,” said David Mooring, president of the foundation. “First, we had problems locating a source for chicken wings. Our normal supplier said he would only be able to provide us three to five cases of wings. We cooked 27 last year.”
Then Sanderson Farms stepped up. Sanderson would be the chief supplier, providing 25 cases of wings.
“We were so relieved and delighted,” Mooring said. “We would be able to continue the tradition we started with the first ‘Wings’ events in 2009. Our supporters have come to expect a top-notch product – and top-notch is the bar we set for ourselves.”
The 2021 “Wings” event will be held Friday, Sept. 10, at the Lenoir County Farmers Market on North Herritage Street. Plates should be available to the general public around 11 a.m. for $5.00 – the same cost as 2009. Wing plates will also be labeled for sponsors who want to pick them up. Of course, we will deliver many plates to sponsors who requested delivery.
“We have nearly 120 sponsors between those who gave monetary donations and those who provide in-kind services,” Mooring said. “We are so grateful for all the support. This event provides most of the year’s entire budget for operating and maintaining the CSS Neuse II.
“From the start, the CSS Neuse II has been a community effort. We are thankful that our community support is still strong.”
