End of an Era in Greene County

End of an Era in Greene County

Snow Hill - On Monday, November 28, 2022, two of the longest serving board members of the Greene County Board of Education held their last meeting as members. Chair Pat Adams and Vice-Chair Joe Smith both lost reelection in the general election, bringing an end to their combined 48 years of service to the Greene County Community.

During the Public and Superintendent Comment periods, Adams and Smith were recognized for their leadership and dedication to the schools, families, and staff of Greene County. Ms. Yuvonka Davis, Director of the Greene County Pre-K Center, spoke first, bringing congratulations. She said, “On behalf of Don and I and our family, we wanted to extend a thank you to both Mrs. Adams and Mr. Smith for their service to our community”.

Following Mrs. Davis, Dr. Creech asked for Adams and Smith to come to the front of the room. Dr. Creech spoke about the “dedication both Mrs. Adams and Mr. Smith have shown to our community for a combined time period of the 48 years.” Creech went on to say, “Greene County Schools are in your debt. I want to thank you on behalf of the board, administration, staff, and families for your tireless efforts on behalf of our schools.”

Following his comments, he presented each of them with a plaque. As he read the plaques, he noted, “Mrs. Pat Adams has served from 1994- 2022 and Mr. Smith served from 2002-2022.”

Brandon Johnson, board member again recognized both Adams and Smith during the board members’ comment period. Johnson said, “I am thankful for your mentorship and leadership through some very difficult times.” Board members Batts and Rackely echoed Johnson’s sentiments.

Mrs. Adams and Mr. Smith will be replaced by Mason Dyer and Darius Shackelford. Dyer and Shackleford will join the board at their December 19th meeting. At that meeting, the board will choose their new chair and vice chair.

Mrs. Adams and Mr. Smith both acknowledged their time on the board as being eventful and both said they will treasure this time. Pat Adams has served as Chair for a better part of her tenure on the board. Mr. Smith has served as vice chair for several terms. Both extended their thanks to Dr. Creech, current superintendent, and Dr. Miller, former superintendent and to all the students, staff, and families who are part of the Greene County School System.
