Dorothy Tingen Hathaway, 90, of Kinston NC, left this world and joined her Heavenly Father on March 12, 2022. She passed peacefully at home, surrounded by people that loved her.
Dot was born on May 18, 1931 in Mt. Olive, NC to Nathaniel and Sadie Thigpen Tingen. She graduated from LaGrange High School in 1949. Dot worked at Sears in Kinston, NC for over 25 years. While working there, she met a customer named Craven that stole her heart. Craven and Dot married on August 30th of 1959. They remained devoted to one another for the rest of her life. Dot was a longtime member of Bethel Free Will Baptist Church in Kinston, NC. She never met a stranger and had a special heart for shut-in ministries. She loved singing, her Sunday School class, and getting to know people.
Dot was preceded in death by two of her beloved sons, Damon Bradley Jones, and Thomas William Hathaway, her precious grandsons Bradley and Matthew Jones, as well as her parents Nathaniel and Sadie, three brothers, Arnold “Red” Tingen, James Tingen and George Tingen, and sisters, Mavis Tingen Gurley, and Iris Ginn.
She is survived by her husband Craven Hathaway of Kinston; a treasured son Leon Jones and wife Teresa of Kinston; her daughter in law Angela Hathaway of Roanoke Rapids; sisters, Brenda Holton of Beaufort and Martha Lane of Smithfield; brother, Kenneth Tingen of LaGrange; grandchildren Kevin Jones, Beth Walker, Philip Jones, Jessica Hill, Daniel Hathaway; Great-Grandchildren Kayleigh Harris, Lydia Garcia, Bradley Jones, Makayla Ballard, Carolina Sauls, Southie Sauls, Adalyn Jones, Dylan Jones, Ember Jones, Titus Hill, Gabriel Hathaway, Delaney Hill, Harrison Hathaway; and Great-Great-Grandchildren, Bruno Garcia, Ruby Harris, Elaina Garcia, Darcy Harris, and Kasey Harris.
The family would like to express a very special thank you to Mrs. Shelby Clark and the team of caregivers from Community Home Care & Hospice for the loving and compassionate care that they have provided.
Funeral will be held 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at Garner Funeral Home with Pastor Chris Truett. Visitation to follow after the funeral service.
Private family burial will be held at a later date.
While flowers are appreciated, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Bethel Free Will Baptist Church.
