Help wanted: City of Kinston - Sanitation Equipment Operator
Description: Performs semiskilled work operating solid waste collection and transport equipment, and related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned Crew Supervisor and Environmental Services Superintendent. Limited supervision is exercised over assigned personnel. Essential Functions Drives trucks over prescribed routes to collect refuse and trash and to transport it to prescribed disposal areas. Operates a packer truck equipped with a hydraulic mechanism to pack and dump refuse. Operates specialized machinery to facilitate collection of refuse, trash, limbs, leaves, etc. Supervises subordinates crew members; instructs new employees in proper collection methods to ensure efficiency and safety. Participates in cleaning, care and maintenance of equipment; conducts safety checks prior to operating equipment. Operates a variety of motorized equipment to assist other divisions within the department. Performs related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications: Less than high school education and moderate experience in the operation of motorized equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 6 months experience preferred. Possession of a Class B commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. General knowledge of the operation and servicing of automotive equipment. General knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation. General knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work. Skill in the operation of automotive equipment. Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions. Ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment. Mechanical aptitude. Ability to supervise assigned personnel. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with associates and customers.
Physical Demands: This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires speaking or hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and repetitive motions; work has no special vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).
