Hoverboard fire safety tips from North Lenoir Fire and Rescue
North Lenoir Fire & Rescue posted the following on their Facebook page:
NLFR responded to a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, crews found a hoverboard on fire. The hoverboard was quicky removed from the home and extinguished. Thankfully, there were no injuries or serious damage reported.
Please remember hoverboards include lithium-ion batteries that store a lot of energy.
Hoverboard fire safety tips:
1. Purchase only UL Certified hoverboards.
2. Never leave a charging hoverboard unattended.
3. Never charge a hoverboard for longer than the recommended time.
4. Store hoverboards in a cool area.
5. Take care of your hoverboard by following the manufacturer's recommendations and inspect often for damage or unusual wear.
6. Plug the charging device directly into an outlet. Never use an extension cord or surge protector.
7. If you notice leaking fluids, excessive heat, odor, sparking or smoke from the hoverboard, stop using it immediately and remove from the structure if safe to do so.
8. Check with the manufacturer to ensure there are no issued recalls for your hoverboard.
