Description
Performs intermediate skilled trades work on a variety of automotive, construction and specialized equipment, and related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Superintendent.
Essential Functions
Performs schedule preventive maintenance service and diagnoses problems.
Performs motor, lube, oil, repair and replacement work, cleaning and replacing spark plugs, installing radiator hoses and maintaining air conditioning systems.
Changes, repairs and replaces tires; welds and fabricates parts.
Tunes motors using standard testing equipment.
Does basic electrical work on automotive equipment such as diagnoses electrical shorts, installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights, and repairing generators and starters.
Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services a wide variety of medium and heavy construction equipment.
Overhauls and fabricates assemblies and accessories; repairs and overhauls specialized equipment.
Installs rings and bearings and makes adjustments.
Performs selected repairs on diesel driven equipment.
Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies.
Takes down, repairs and reassembles air compressors, pumps and related equipment.
Refaces brake drums and relines brakes.
Makes service calls to repair or two stalled equipment to garage.
Performs related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED, Vocational/Technical education preferred and moderate experience in automotive, construction and specialized equipment repair, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum 1 year experience preferred.
General knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of light automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment.
Thorough knowledge of and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery.
Ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts.
Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
Ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
Mechanical aptitude.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Possession of ASE certification in light or heavy equipment preferred.
Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina, or the ability to obtain within 120 days of employment.
Physical Demands
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently standing and occasionally requires walking, speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception and color perception; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).
