G.I. Joe's Continues to serve the community

G.I. Joe's Military Living History Museum, nestled in Lenoir County, is a beacon of honor and remembrance, paying tribute to the veterans who have served their country throughout history. Carol Cantu, the curator and treasurer of the organization, sheds light on the museum's mission and ongoing efforts.

Situated at 1165 B Hwy 11/55 in Kinston, North Carolina, G.I. Joe's Military Living History Museum serves as a living testament to the sacrifices made by American veterans. With a mission to ensure that history is not forgotten, the museum provides a comprehensive view of military history, from the Revolutionary War to the present day.

"We are probably the only museum east of 95 that covers from the Revolutionary War period all the way up to the present day," Cantu explains. "We're a living History Museum because we have pictures of the guys in our area that actually fought in the wars. We remember their life sacrifices."

The museum's unique approach resonates with visitors. Cantu recounts the story of a couple from Washington, D.C., who stumbled upon the museum and left with a newfound appreciation for its mission.

"They were happy to be greeted friendly," Cantu says. "Both of them told me that they were highly impressed. I gave them a personal tour or took them through like I would if it was a school group."

G.I. Joe's isn't just a place to view artifacts. It's a place of healing and support. Cantu and her team have initiated programs such as therapeutic art and writing groups to help veterans, spouses, and children deal with things like PTSD.

"It's not just about educating the public. It's also healing for our veterans," Cantu says.

The museum also actively participates in community events and fundraisers, ensuring that veterans are not overlooked. They hold events such as the black history program, Sloppy Joe events, and the Flag Field of Honor, which allows individuals to sponsor American flags in honor of loved ones.

"For $10 sponsorship, an American flag is placed in several locations throughout the county," Cantu notes.

While the museum receives support from big donors, it's the small monthly donors who play a pivotal role. "The small monthly donors are what we call our supporting donors," Cantu explains. "They help pay for the light bill and janitorial services, among other things."

Cantu emphasizes that the museum is always looking for more small monthly supporters, and individuals interested in contributing can contact her directly.

G.I. Joe's Military Living History Museum's dedication to honoring veterans and educating the public is an ongoing endeavor. As Cantu sums it up, "We're more personalized in our approach, and we're here to ensure that veterans are never forgotten."

The museum's commitment to preserving the memory of those who served is a testament to the enduring spirit of gratitude in the community. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm.

In Cantu's words, "If we don't remember our history, we're doomed to repeat it."
