Juntos Program at Greene Central High School continues to grow
The Juntos program at Greene Central High School continues to grow and now looks to help make an impact on the national level. The program works to unite community partners to provide Hispanic students and their parents with knowledge, skills, and resources to make college a family goal. Juntos, which means “Together” in Spanish, helps Latino youth (8th-12th) and their parents navigate the social and academic stresses that can inhibit youth’s successful transition to high school and higher education.
This program started in 2021 at Greene Central and this year they have included two students from Greene County Middle School as well. Families and students have been involved in different informative sessions and family night events as well as community service activities. The students also had the opportunity to attend the Summer Academy at NC State University.
This school year, the members have been involved in different community projects. They worked in partnership with "Project Please Stay" dedicated to raising awareness about teens' mental health. The families donated different desserts to be sold during Ram City homecoming event in 2022. Additionally, they have created the Juntos Scholarship fund for our students at GCHS. This past week, they completed the first fundraising for this scholarship and are excited about more events to come.
All of the group's hard work has gained the attention of program leaders at the state and national levels. Student members, Derek Carrillo and Christopher Guerra, participated in the first Plant Science Outreach Day along with seventy-four students across nine counties, held at NC State University. The students learned about different careers in Agricultural Science.
Efforts like these led the Greene County program to be a part of the Juntos National Convening at Oregon State University from March 21st-24th. Thirteen students from North Carolina will be traveling to Oregon to represent their programs and five out of those thirteen students are from Greene County! Esmeralda Aguirre, Maribel Gonzalez, Joanna Alarcon, Flor Martín, and David Romero, all received scholarships to attend this event from an anonymous donor.
Additionally, Derek Carrillo was nominated and chosen to represent the Juntos program of North Carolina at the 4H National Convention in Washington, DC, from April 14th-19th.
