Lenoir County Students demonstrate their skills in the Science Fair Showcase
On Tuesday, students from Lenoir County Public Schools system participate in a full day focused on science starting with a presentation by scientists from UNC's Morehead Planetarium, coaching sessions from local science fair facilitators, and the public spotlight in the evening. Select students from all schools were chosen to participate in the Science Fair Showcase. The purpose of the event is to educate, entertain, and energize school Science Fair winners as they head to North Carolina regional competition.
The process of getting students ready for the Science Fair Showcase is headed by the facilitators. Stacy Cauley, one of the elementary facilitators talked about what occurs during the day of the Showcase. Cauley says, “The student present their projects in a setting with other students [from other schools]. In the evening, parents are invited and be able to see all the students’ projects.”
The students are set up around the Performing Arts Center. During the coaching sessions with the facilitators, we talked with three separate students who are participants in the showcase, these students include Kamya Yerby-Simmons, Arianna Aviles, and Morgan Pittman-Cannon. We talked with the students about their challenges, excitement, and projects.
Kamya Yerby-Simmons from Contentnea-Savannah gave us her favorite part about working on her project, “I loved working with my friends and having a good time.”
Morgan Pittman-Cannon from Rochelle Middle School studied “How Exercise Affects the Brain.” She says, “the project wasn’t very difficult…[the best part of the project] was walking around with her family.”
Arianna Aviles from Contentnea-Savannah whose project was to build a boat that would go the fastest during the LCC boat race. Aviles had a rough start to her project, “our boat wouldn’t not print, that was an issue on our app.” However, once the boats were able to print, Arianna says, “ the [boat] race, even though we didn’t win, it was still fun.”
The public event on Tuesday takes place at the Performing Arts Center on the campus of Kinston High School at 6:30 pm. The public event encourages parents and guardians to learn about the science fair projects and help provide feedback on the presentations.
