UPDATE: Gas leak is now secure, residents will be returning soon

UPDATE:

The gas leak at the corner of Eats King Street and South McDaniels St in Kinston is now secure. Soon, residents will be allowed back in the area.

Previous Story:

Lenoir County Emergency Services is on scene assisting Kinston Department of Fire & Rescue with a major gas leak at the corner of East King St and South McDaniels St in Kinston.

Just before 9 a.m. this morning, a construction crew struck a 2-inch natural gas main, creating a leak. Residents in the area shown have been evacuated to the Simon Bright Community Center.

Piedmont Natural Gas is on scene working to secure the leak and the Kinston Fire Department is monitoring gas vapor levels in the area. Everyone should remain clear of the area until further notice.
