Obituary: Murrell Ray Broadway
Murrell Ray Broadway, 83 of Kinston was greeted by his Lord and Savior Monday, June 19, 2023 at the home of his eldest son. He was preceded in death by his parents William “Bill” & Doris Broadway, his in-laws Reverend Clifton & Dorris Rice. A niece Jennifer Krochmalny Shagena, and great niece, Jayda Katherine Shagena. Paternal grandmother Olive Branch Broadway, who was as much a mother to him as a grandmother.
Murrell loved and served the Lord his whole life and was a member of Faith Fellowship Church in Kinston. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was retired from Woodmen of the World Life Insurance and Rice Monument Works in Kinston. His wife, sister, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were the center of his life. He loved his family with a deep love and no one ever doubted how much he cared for them. He never met a stranger, and if you ever spoke with him, he would be quick to tell you how family was everything. He also had a love of wood turning and made many beautiful pieces the family will cherish.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart, the love of his life, and wife of 62 years, Joan Rice Broadway. His children, Jeffrey Rice Broadway and wife Michael of Kinston, Patrick Ray Broadway of Cary, Jill Elizabeth Wikoff and husband Matthew of Middletown, DE, and Scott Broadway and wife Erin. His favorite sister Kay Broadway Manning and husband Ray of Greenville. Granddaughters, Emily Broadway Haysom and husband Derek of Houston, TX, Hannah Broadway Goktan and husband Devrim of Fort Collins, CO, Caroline Elizabeth Wikoff, Rachel, Lydia, and Joanna Broadway. Great grandsons Harris “Harry” Rice and George Hutter Haysom, Joshua Tanner and William Finley Goktan. His nephew Daniel Lee Krochmalny, and great nephew Zeke Krochmalny of Greenville, NC. Although they were not related to him, Calvin Bell of Kinston and his “best student” Lisa Casteen of Dover were like family to him and could always be counted on no matter what was asked of them.
The family would also like to thank a special caregiver, Lakeisha “ChiChi” Turnage of Greendale Forest Nursing home for the love and care he received from her for the last two years.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21 at Howard & Carter Funeral Home and other times at the home of his son, Jeffrey Broadway. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 22 at 10:00 a.m. at Faith Fellowship Church with Pastor John Robert Harris officiating. Burial will follow the service at Westview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made in his memory to Faith Fellowship Church, 2278 Pauls Path Road, Kinston, NC 28504.
