Zacchaeus Jones Crowned Mr. Beautillion 2024
Zacchaeus Jones, a junior at the Lenoir County Early College High School, made a significant mark at the 2024 Beautillion Scholarship Pageant, winning both Mr. Young Man of the Year and Mr. Beautillion titles. His achievements shined brightly in an event that celebrates the aspirations and accomplishments of young African American men.
The Beautillion, sponsored by the Nu Iota Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, is an annual scholarship pageant that focuses on community service, academics, and leadership among young black males. Jones was one of four participants who showcased their talents and commitment to societal progress.
Jones, known for his outgoing and charismatic personality, shared his experiences and future ambitions in an interview. He expressed his passion for helping others and his love for academics, particularly math. "I plan to study healthcare management and minor in secondary education," Jones said, outlining his clear vision for the future.
The pageant, held at Rochelle Middle School, was a blend of elegance and expression. Participants, including Jones, adorned in suits and tuxedos, walked across the stage, gave speeches, and performed dances. "It was really, really nice," Jones recalled.
A key highlight for Jones was delivering a speech on a topic that resonates deeply with him: "What it means to be a young black man in 2024 and how I plan to overcome societal expectations." He spoke candidly about personal experiences and societal challenges, using them as stepping stones for his ambition and resilience. "I plan to overcome [societal expectations] by going to college, being a leader in my community," Jones stated, reflecting on his journey and aspirations.
The interview segment, which constituted a significant portion of the pageant's scoring, challenged Jones to think on his feet. "Some of [the questions] seemed like they pulled them right out of their pocket," he remarked, emphasizing the importance of being prepared and thoughtful in his responses.
Jones's family background, deeply rooted in education and community service, has significantly influenced his life. His mother, a social studies teacher, and his involvement in the church have shaped his values and goals. Discussing his future, Jones expressed an interest in healthcare administration and politics, with a particular fondness for American government.
The Beautillion win opens several opportunities for Jones. Besides the scholarship for college, he plans to engage in community activities and mentor young men aspiring to participate in future pageants.
As Jones continues his educational journey, he remains focused on his goals, acknowledging the importance of hard work and community involvement. His win at the Beautillion is not just a personal achievement but a testament to his commitment to making a positive impact in his community and beyond.
