Ribbon cutting celebrates new Greene County Sheriff's Office

SNOW HILL — Local officials and community members gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday to celebrate the opening of the new Greene County Sheriff’s Office. The event marked the culmination of a collaborative effort among county leaders, law enforcement, and state representatives to enhance public safety infrastructure in Greene County.

Sheriff Matt Sasser addressed the crowd, expressing his gratitude for the new facility and its importance to the department. “This office has been a project we’ve worked on for years,” Sasser said. “It’s designed to improve efficiency, particularly for inmate transports and overall security. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished and hope this building will serve the citizens of Greene County for many years to come.”

The new facility replaces the sheriff’s previous office, with plans to convert the old space into a courtroom. Senator Buck Newton spoke about the decision, highlighting the practical benefits. “As the conversation progressed, it became clear that moving the sheriff’s office to this space made more sense,” Newton said. “It allows for better efficiency and safety while creating a much-needed courtroom in the old location. I truly hope this will serve the people of Greene County well for decades.”

The project was made possible through state and local funding, reflecting a broader commitment to upgrading infrastructure in the county. NC Representative Chris Humphrey acknowledged the teamwork involved in bringing the vision to life. “This facility is the product of collaboration,” Humphrey said. “From the Board of Commissioners to the sheriff’s staff and the construction teams, everyone played a role. It’s a testament to what we can accomplish together.”

Greene County Commissioner Benny Heath also spoke briefly, emphasizing the county’s pride in its employees and the services they provide to the community. Heath thanked those involved in the planning and construction process.

As the event concluded, Sasser shared his vision for the future. “This building is more than just a structure; it’s a foundation for better service to our community,” he said. “Thank you to everyone who made this possible.”

The ceremony ended with the official ribbon cutting, marking a new chapter for law enforcement in Greene County.
