Evelyn Dove-Coleman: Opinions May Differ

I have a Soror and friend whom I met when we were representing clients on different sides of a case in 1983. As opposing counsel, we were supposed to have differing positions for which we argued. And I guess we actually did that. However, there was one point on which we easily agreed. We settled the case upon that one point. My client thought it was a genius settlement, so I surely benefited. But moreover, I gained a friend in my opposing counsel who has stood by me for decades through thick and thin.

She is super smart and is a great conversationalist. People around her can spend hours seated at the table enjoying good food and discussing the day's events and issues intelligently. If she invites you to a party, you are assured of finding joy. She is loyal and dependable repletely. When some others turned their backs, she stood firm.

So when Pam Hunter recommended that I listen to a YouTube speech, I heeded her recommendation. The sermon by Dr. Howard John-Wesley is located at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4OUyWiKLyA

beginning at 1:01. He discusses his theme "Disputable Matters" as it relates to the election and to history. It is thought-provoking.

As I listened to him speak, I found myself having aha moments when he mentioned that opposing positions are just opinions that may differ and that our unique journeys in life bring us to where we are in thought. We have to be cautious about self-righteously believing that our way is the only way. And we need to recognize that our nation is stronger when we are united though diverse. And for heaven's sake, we must not raise our children to hate others they don't even know simply because.
