The Counter offers southern-inspired dishes in downtown Kinston
A new restaurant from chef and author Vivian Howard has opened in downtown Kinston. The Counter at Chef & the Farmer, located at 120 W. Gordon St., began operations Thursday through Sunday, noon to 8 p.m., offering a menu built around local and seasonal ingredients. It occupies the space formerly held by Chef & the Farmer’s wine and gift shop.
The Counter’s posted information indicates that it will provide a counter-service model, allowing diners to select menu items and either assemble a full meal or choose individual sides. The menu, according to details posted online, features dishes such as Blueberry BBQ Chicken Enchiladas and a Porchetta Sandwich. Additional options include items described as vegetable-forward, with offerings such as a butterbean-based smashburger and a dish called Sweet Potato on Steroids, accompanied by green curry vegetables and peanuts.
Sides listed include fried collards, mac and cheese, and roasted roots. Beverages range from tea and coffee to wine, beer, and cocktails. The service style is described online as casual and designed to offer flexibility. According to publicly available communications, diners may find salads made with ingredients like apples, spiced pecans, and pickled red onion, as well as hushpuppies served with apple and jalapeno preserves.
On her website, Howard said, “At The Counter we believe good food can be nurturing and satisfying, casual and thoughtfully prepared.”
