Kinston City Council votes to establish downtown social district

In a pivotal decision this afternoon, the City Council of Kinston voted to approve the ordinance establishing a Downtown Kinston Social District. The special meeting convened at 3:00 p.m. to deliberate on this long-anticipated move.

The ordinance, which outlines the regulations and guidelines for the social district, was passed unanamously by the council. According to the ordinance, the designated Downtown Kinston Social District will allow patrons to responsibly consume alcoholic beverages in designated public areas during specified hours.

The creation of the Downtown Kinston Social District is expected to bolster foot traffic in the downtown area, potentially attracting new businesses and tourists. Pending approval from the North Carolina ABC Commission and the installation of required signage, the social district is slated to be operational by July 3, 2024. This timeline sets the stage for a summer debut, offering residents and visitors a new way to experience downtown Kinston.
