Arendell Parrot Academy hosted SCAD professors for special workshops
Arendell Parrot Academy (APA) in Kinston was abuzz with excitement last Friday, as it hosted a series of unique workshops conducted by visiting professors from the prestigious Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD). This unprecedented event brought a touch of Savannah's renowned art scene directly to the APA campus, providing middle and high school students with an exceptional opportunity to engage with leading figures in the arts and design industry.
The visit marked the first time SCAD had sent its faculty off-campus for such workshops, making it a significant occasion for APA. Whitney Grady, APA’s Head of Middle School, reflected on the collaboration and its importance for the students.
"We were honored to welcome SCAD professors to APA," Grady remarked. "SCAD is known for producing talented artists and designers who go on to work with major global brands."
The workshops, which ran from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM, were divided into sessions tailored for middle school and high school students. Grady described the activities, highlighting a particular focus on sneaker design that engaged students in merging hands-on art with technology.
"It was a mix of middle school through seniors," Grady explained, referring to the variety of sessions offered throughout the day. "The students had the opportunity to design and create based on their own sneaker designs."
Long-Nam To, one of the visiting SCAD professors leading the workshops, expressed his admiration for APA's campus and the warm reception they received upon arrival. To underscored the rapid evolution of the industry and the importance of preparing students with the latest skills.
"In this case, it's especially important on the high school level," said To, stressing the need for educational institutions to adapt swiftly to industry changes.
To highlighted SCAD's role in preparing students for successful careers in creative disciplines and accessories design, emphasizing the collaboration with APA as part of a broader effort to bridge educational and industry needs.
"We were pleased to collaborate with APA and hope to continue these workshops in the future," To added, hinting at potential future collaborations between SCAD and APA.
APA's partnership with SCAD not only provided students with valuable exposure to industry trends but also highlighted the commitment of educational institutions to equip the next generation with relevant skills for a rapidly evolving world.
