Artist Jamil Burton paints mural at Friends of the Homeless Shelter
The Friends of the Homeless Shelter in Kinston has been graced with a new mural titled "Tree of Hope," painted by local artist Jamil Burton. This vibrant piece is more than just a splash of color on a wall; it is a symbol of community, resilience, and the shared journey of hope.
The mural's dedication ceremony was a heartwarming affair, attended by members of the community, local officials, and representatives from various organizations that collaborated on the project. Danny Rice, the event's organizer, expressed his gratitude for the collective effort, stating, "This project has been a true partnership, with contributions from the Friends of the Homeless, Mary's Kitchen, and the Kinston Housing Authority. It's wonderful to see how art can bring people together."
City Council member Felicia Solomon also spoke at the event, highlighting the mural's significance. "When I drove by one day and saw what was happening, it just made sense. The beautiful thing about this mural is that it speaks of hope. Even when life is at its darkest, this mural is a reminder of hope and a celebration of who we are as a community," Solomon said, capturing the essence of the mural’s message.
Burton, who has been a resident of Kinston for six years, took the stage to share his vision behind the artwork. "This project is personal to me. Every movement throughout time has been propelled by art, and this mural is another interpretation of pushing our message forward. The 'Tree of Hope' symbolizes shelter, comfort, and the unity of our community," Burton explained.
The mural's focal point is a smiling tree, a detail that Burton emphasized as essential. "A smile can spark hope even on the harshest days. Without that smile, the mural would be incomplete. It represents the spirit of everyone who comes through this place," Burton noted, reflecting on the many faces he encountered while working on the mural.
Danny Rice added, "Jamil has captured the essence of our mission here at Friends of the Homeless and Mary's Kitchen. His work is not just about painting a wall but about telling our story and spreading our message of community and hope."
The mural was made possible through a grant from the Arts Council, facilitated by Sandy Landis. "Art has always been a catalyst for change and a means to bring people together. We're grateful to Jamil for sharing his talent and vision with us," Rice said.
As the ceremony concluded, Pastor Reginald Bradshaw led a dedicatory prayer, invoking blessings on the mural and the community it represents. With "Tree of Hope," Jamil Burton has not only enriched the aesthetic of the Friends of the Homeless Shelter but has also reinforced the bonds of community and the enduring spirit of hope in Kinston.
