Obituary: Marie Slot Singleton
Marie Slot Singleton, age 89, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2024. She was the oldest daughter of Clara Stelpstra Slot and John Conrad Slot, both immigrants from Holland. Marie was born in Paterson, NJ but moved with her family to Terra Ceia, NC at the age of 13. She grew up in this small, rural Dutch community amidst dairy and flower farms. She often shared stories of pulling cockleburs in the fields of peonies that her father grew.
In 1953 she married Marvin Edward Singleton, and they settled in Kinston. They had three daughters, whom she considered to be her greatest accomplishment. Marie was quiet but hardworking and creative. She could go into a shop, look at a dress and go home and make it for herself or her daughters. She loved to sew and for many years made clothing for the public. This allowed her to be home with her children and contribute money to the family. She honed her sewing skills making her own clothes as a teenager since she was 5’11” and found it hard to find dresses that were long enough. After her youngest daughter was in second grade, she became a Reading Specialist, working with elementary children at Teacher’s Memorial School. Subsequently, she became a Teaching Assistant in the second grade where she remained employed for 27 years.
After retiring she and Marvin traveled extensively. She made many trips to Holland to visit family and took all three of her girls there to celebrate her 70th birthday. Marie excelled as a homemaker. She entertained often and possessed the gift of hospitality. She spent many hours helping others as a hospital volunteer, a church elder’s wife, and a friend. She was known for her meringue pies, both chocolate and lemon. Often these were taken to those sick or grieving. She wrote beautiful notes and spent most Sunday afternoons writing cards to those who needed encouragement.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin Edward Singleton; and two brothers, William, and Theodore Slot. Scott (Bill), Lois Singleton Sutton (Johnnie), and Beth Singleton Maness; six grandchildren, Sara Scott Shields (Tim), Elizabeth Sutton, Andrew Sutton, Anna Scott Pulliam (Joseph), Josh Maness (Maci), and Nicholas Maness (Jeri-Beth), five great grandchildren with one on the way, as well as many nieces and nephews. Marie was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, William, and Theodore Slot.
