Emma Barnes appointed as new executive director of EPIC

Emma Barnes has been named the new Executive Director of the Eastern Pregnancy Information Clinic (EPIC), taking on the role after volunteering with the organization since moving to Kinston in 2022. Barnes, who has a background in nonprofits, marketing, and communications, began her tenure at the end of July.

Barnes, originally from Thomasville, N.C., expressed her enthusiasm for the new position and her commitment to the community. “I’m excited to be here, excited to be part of EPIC. I think they have a great mission and provide a lot of valuable services to women and families in the community,” Barnes said. She added that Kinston reminds her of her hometown, noting the strong sense of community and the welcoming atmosphere.

Before joining EPIC, Barnes worked with Southeastern Cancer Care, a nonprofit in Goldsboro. Her involvement with EPIC began as a volunteer, where she facilitated online parenting classes. After EPIC underwent a leadership transition, the board approached Barnes about stepping into the executive director role. “I thought about it and prayed about it for a while and then started at the end of July,” she explained.

Barnes outlined her plans for the first 90 days, emphasizing the importance of community engagement. “Really getting out there and kind of rebuilding and reengaging with the community,” she said. “No organization can do anything without the support of others, and that support has many different faces, many different ways we can partner together.” Barnes aims to collaborate with existing services in Lenoir County to support women and families, ensuring EPIC’s efforts complement rather than duplicate other local initiatives.

As for changes at EPIC, Barnes assured that there would be no immediate shifts in operations. The day-to-day activities at the Kinston and New Bern centers will continue to be overseen by Center Directors Leslie Rigsby and Sheila Thune, respectively. Barnes will focus on long-term strategic goals, particularly in ensuring financial stability and expanding the clinic's reach.

Barnes also announced that EPIC will host an open house at the Kinston Center on Friday, Sept. 27, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. “We’ve recently remodeled, so we would love everybody to see the center, learn more about us, and how we can help,” she said.

The community is invited to attend the open house to meet Barnes and learn more about EPIC’s services.
