The following inspections were conducted by the Lenoir County Health Department:

Baron And The Beef

1631 Hwy 70 E, Kinston 

Date: 8/14

Score: 91.5

Observations: 

Dish machine is not pulling sanitizer. No utensils observed being washed prior to determining this tonight.

Two pots of meatballs in walk-in which were held hot last night are 44-45f.

Foods on salad bar all range between 50 and 52f.

Consumer Advisory is provided but not correct.

Chemicals stored on shelf above crock pots of soup and meatballs in kitchen.

Meatballs cooked last night were in a thick layer and not cooled properly and at 44-45f.

Food employees do not wear effective hair restraints.

The dispensing utensil for ham in the walk-in is a cup (coffee cup), and the handle is in contact with the ham. The dispensing utensil for this ham shall not be kept inside the food.

Utensils are stored in bins that have crumbs and crud. Some utensils are stored in contact with chargers for electronics.

Stacks of clam shells are stored open and not inverted. Single-service items shall be stored inverted or in an approved manner to prevent contamination.

Mixer bowl is extremely worn, although does no visibly wipe off, could certainly be contaminating the food. Bowl shall be replaced.

Several areas of crumbs, build-up, debris, etc. Nonfood contact surfaces shall be clean.

Plumbing leaking on dish machine. There is no hot water in men's restroom. Plumbing system shall be in good repair.

Several areas of build-up, crud, lack of cleaning, etc. on floors, walls, and ceilings.

Beach Bound 

211 E New Bern Road, Kinston

Observations: 

Sanitizer in premixed Quats spray bottle is less than 200 ppm. Sanitizer in premixed Quats spray bottle (in stock) is also less than 200 ppm. 

Sausage dog preparation dated 07.18.2024 which is 8 days out.

Chemicals stored on top shelf above clean utensils.

Food handlers wear watches, bracelet. Food handlers shall wear no jewelry on arms and hands other than a plain band such as a wedding ring.

Spoon for dispensing slaw stays in container with lid on and barely is above the level of the food creating risk for hands to touch food.

Leak underneath wash compartment of 3-compartment sink. 


Creekside Cafe

2359 Falling Creek Road, Kinston

Observations: 

A large amount of ice buildup observed at the back of the counter top pre-made sandwich refrigerator. The unit is working at this time however.


Golden China Buffet

4147 W Vernon Avenue, Kinston 

Date: 9/16

Score: 90

Observations: 

Employee entered kitchen and began working without washing hands. 

Employee dumped egg rolls onto sheet and used bare hands to spread egg rolls out to cool. 

Some dishes were visibly dirty.

Cooked chicken in prep unit was above 41 degrees. Do not over-stack in prep unit to maintain proper temperature.

Prep unit is not designed to properly cool food. Use alternate method to rapid cool food and utilize walk in units.

Spices at stove are not labeled and removed from original container.

Cooling egg rolls stored next to screen door. During time of inspection, the weather was rainy and windy. Due to this, water was entering through the screen door near the egg rolls. Large open bags of corn starch and MSG in back storage room. 

Sheet pans were stacked wet on wire shelves. Let dishes air dry before stacking.

Walk in freezer door in poor repair, the door is separating and cracked.

Shelving in walk-in and in food prep area is rusty.

Non food contact surfaces such as shelving, wire racks, inside and outside of equipment, dry food bins, ceiling vents etc need additional cleaning. 

One lid broken and missing from dumpster. Dumpsters missing drain plugs.

Floor, walls and ceilings need additional cleaning. Floor tiles are damaged. Observed acoustic ceiling tiles throughout the kitchen.


Jin Jin Chinese Restaurant 

304 B East Washington Street, La Grange 

Date: 7/23

Observations: 

Establishment has not Vomit and Diarrhea Clean-up Plan.

Insides of dry ingredient containers (salt and pepper) and inside of rice scoop have much food build-up.

Thick layers of recently cooked lo mein in covered containers. This lo mein was cooked approximately one hour prior to temps being measured and is at 70-76f.

Drip in walk-in lands on lid of fresh garlic container.

Cook is not wearing a hair restraint.

Wet wiping cloth on prep table. Wet wiping cloths shall be kept in an approved solution of sanitizer, shall be in use by a worker, or shall be in the dirty bin.

Scoop for dry rice is a pot with no handle. The scoop shall have a handle and the handle shall be above the top of the food.

Component in walk-in refrigerator is dripping. Red shelving above food preparation sinks are peeling. Shelving in walk-in is rusty. 

Cold water for handwash sink in kitchen was turned off. Cold water for food preparation sink is turned off due to leaking. Faucet in staff restroom will not turn in the direction to allow cold water to come through. Can wash has standing water; drain is clogged with dirt & grease.

Some broken floor tiles. Vinyl coving falling off the wall in walk-in freezer doorway area. 


Sandpiper Seafood 

7877 Hwy 70 West, La Grange

Date: 8/28

Score: 97.5

Observations: 

Employee health policy did not include salmonella nontyphoidal.

Salad prep unit (true) unit has pooled water inside. Water source needs to be found and repaired to prevent contamination to food. Two filter missing in hood. Need to be replaced.

Provide a test kit that accurately measures sanitizer concentrations. No test quat test strips available. 

Air dry dish rack and inside crab leg freezer need additional cleaning.

Toilet seat in employee restroom is in disrepair. 

Floor in front of fryer/cook area are missing tiles; not smooth and easily cleanable.


Subway 

401 E New Bern Road, Kinston

Observations: 

No ServSafe food protection manager present.

Women's restroom out of paper towels at hand wash sinks. 

Dishes stacked wet.

Crumb and residue build up on shelves under prep line, gaskets of equipment, etc.

Build up observed under sinks, shelving racks and equipment. 

Observed joint between walk in cooler and walk in freezer. The caulking seal around this equipment is rusted and coming up.
