Kinston man charged with DWI and child abuse after traffic stop
On January 11, 2025, at approximately 7:59 PM, officers from B-Squad initiated a traffic stop on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard for an insurance violation and failure to maintain lane control. During the stop, officers made contact with the driver, Wilson Murphy, 49, of Kinston, and suspected he was impaired.
Following a thorough investigation, officers determined that Murphy was indeed impaired while operating the vehicle. In addition to being charged with Driving While Impaired, Murphy was also charged with five counts of Misdemeanor Child Abuse, as there were five children under the age of 12 in the vehicle at the time of the stop.
The vehicle Murphy was operating was seized under North Carolina's DWI seizure requirements.
