Norman Bryson named new Lenoir County Emergency Services Director
Norman Bryson has been appointed as the new Emergency Services Director for Lenoir County, according to County Manager Michael James. Bryson, who brings over three decades of experience in emergency management and fire services, will officially begin his tenure on Jan. 6.
“We are pleased to announce that Mr. Norman Bryson has been appointed as the new Emergency Services Director for Lenoir County,” James said. “With a wealth of experience in emergency management and public safety, Mr. Bryson brings a proven track record of leadership and dedication to serving communities. We are confident that his expertise will further enhance the exceptional work of our outstanding team of public safety professionals, ensuring the continued safety and well-being of our residents.”
A Seasoned Leader in Emergency Services
Bryson has served as the Director of Onslow County’s Emergency Services Department since June 2011, overseeing operations during 11 local states of emergency, five of which received federal disaster declarations. His extensive credentials include a North Carolina Type I Emergency Manager certification and instructor certifications in firefighter training, incident command systems, and community emergency response.
In his role with Onslow County, Bryson has been a key figure in emergency planning and response, earning a reputation for strong leadership and an ability to navigate high-pressure situations effectively.
Lenoir County's Emergency Services Evolution
Bryson’s appointment comes as Lenoir County aims to bolster the morale and operational efficiency of its Emergency Services team, a department that has faced challenges in recent years. The office, like many others statewide, has contended with shifts in dynamics due to the COVID-19 pandemic, staffing concerns, and changes in leadership.
Since 2019, the department has seen multiple transitions, with Jerri King and Murry Stroud both serving in leadership roles before Bryson’s appointment. Stroud will continue overseeing EMS operations for the county.
