Samuel Kornegay, a seasoned emergency services professional, has been appointed Deputy Fire Chief of the Kinston Department of Fire and Rescue. Kornegay, who previously served as Deputy Director of Lenoir County Emergency Services, brings years of experience and leadership to his new role.
Fire Chief Chad Jackson announced Kornegay’s selection after what he described as a rigorous evaluation process.
“After a very tough and thorough process, I selected Deputy Chief Kornegay, who has the skills and desire to assist with the future development of the Kinston Department of Fire & Rescue, leading us to great things,” Jackson said.

During his time with Lenoir County Emergency Services, Kornegay was instrumental in acquiring a 35-foot mobile command unit. The unit, equipped with advanced communication tools and workstations, improved the coordination of emergency responses in the region.
Kinston City Manager Rhonda Barwick believes Kornegay has a desire to help his community.

He was quick to respond to our calls for assistance and showed a genuine desire to help our community. His knowledge and experience will be a great asset to Kinston.”
Kornegay’s appointment is seen as a strategic step forward for the department as it continues to enhance its operations and services to the Kinston community.
“I am very excited for the opportunity to be chosen as the Deputy Fire Chief for Kinston Department of Fire and Rescue,” said Kornegay. “I am looking forward to building new relationships while making a positive difference in the progression of the department.”
