Rep. Don Davis introduces bill to support veterans transitioning to civilian careers
Standing inside Lenoir Lock & Key Service, a veteran-owned business in Kinston, U.S. Rep. Don Davis, D-N.C., announced new legislation aimed at easing the transition for military service members moving from active duty to civilian life. The bill focuses on career development and business opportunities for veterans, ensuring they have the resources to secure jobs or start their own businesses after service.
The shop, owned by Carl Hill, has been in operation for more than 30 years and is just one of many veteran-owned businesses that could benefit from the proposed legislation. Davis emphasized the importance of supporting veterans beyond their military service by helping them establish economic stability.
“We have amazing heroes serving our country, putting on the uniform to protect us,” Davis said. “As they transition to civilian life, this bill is a tool to help them chart another career path.”
The legislation, which Davis hopes to advance within the 119th Congress, would create additional support structures for veterans, helping them secure jobs or start businesses after service. The bill also seeks to address concerns surrounding veteran homelessness by improving economic stability for former service members.
Davis, who co-chairs the For Country Caucus, a bipartisan group of veterans in Congress, stressed the importance of working across party lines to pass veteran-focused legislation.
“In the last Congress, our caucus endorsed 35 veteran-related bills, and 13 became law,” Davis said. “We are committed to working in a bipartisan way to support our veterans, their families, and our communities.”
The bill will go through the standard legislative process, and while Davis expressed a desire for immediate implementation, he acknowledged the realities of government timelines.
“I would love to see it go into effect tomorrow or even today, but government doesn’t work that fast,” he said. “We have a two-year window to push this bill forward, and we’re going to do everything we can to make it a reality.”
As the legislation moves forward, Davis encouraged bipartisan collaboration and reiterated his commitment to ensuring veterans receive the support they need.
