La Grange man out on pretrial release for murder arrested after fleeing checkpoint, found with stolen firearm

A La Grange man out of jail on pretrial release for murder was arrested by the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office Friday after trying to evade a driver’s license checkpoint and being found with a stolen firearm.

Da’Marie Jyz’mire Gray, 19, attempted to evade a checkpoint being conducted by A-Shift deputies at the intersection of Field Station Road and Eason Road on Thursday. When a deputy caught up to Gray’s vehicle, Gray fled at a high rate of speed, passing a vehicle in a no-passing zone and running a stop sign.

Gray’s vehicle stopped at a residence in the 4000 block of Owens Family Road and Gray ran into the residence. A short time later, he exited the residence and was placed into custody.

Other LCSO detectives and deputies arrived and they applied for a search warrant for the residence. The search, which included assistance from a Kinston Police Department canine, revealed a stolen handgun with an altered serial number in the back yard of the residence.

Gray was transported to the Lenoir County Magistrate’s Office, where he was charged with:

·      Felony charge of fleeing to elude arrest

·      Felony charge of possessing a stolen firearm

·      Felony charge of possessing a gun with an altered serial number

·      Misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed gun

·      Misdemeanor charge of resisting a public officer

·      Misdemeanor traffic violations

Gray received no bond due to being out on pretrial release for an attempted first degree murder charge.
