Greene County Board of Education announces Rodney McNeill as next Superintendent
Snow Hill – The Greene County Board of Education has voted to appoint Dr. Rodney McNeill as the next superintendent of Greene County Schools, effective July 1, 2025. This decision follows the announcement of current superintendent Dr. Creech’s retirement, shared with the board on February 24, 2025. Dr. Creech has served Greene County Schools in various leadership roles since 2014 and has led the district as superintendent since 2022.
"We are incredibly grateful for Dr. Creech’s unwavering dedication and service to Greene County Schools," said Joey Rackley, Chair of the Board of Education. "His commitment to our students, staff, and community has left a lasting impact, and we wish him the best in his well-earned retirement. We are excited to welcome Dr. McNeill as our next superintendent as we look ahead. We are confident that his experience, vision, and passion for education will ensure a smooth transition and continued success for our district. We look forward to working alongside him as we build on the strong foundation already in place."
Dr. McNeill, a lifelong educator and dedicated leader, brings over two decades of experience to the role. His career began in the classroom as a fifth-grade teacher at Sam D. Bundy Elementary School in Pitt County. With a passion for leadership and student success, he pursued a Master of School Administration degree through the North Carolina Principal Fellows Program, graduating in 2011. He then transitioned into school administration, serving as an assistant principal at Farmville Central High School before joining Greene County Schools as the principal of Greene Early College. Over the next eight years, he led the school to remarkable achievements, including ranking in the top 5% for academic growth statewide in 2019 and earning multiple A school report card grades. His leadership also contributed to maintaining a 100% graduation rate for several consecutive years.
Building on this success, Dr. McNeill furthered his expertise by earning a Doctor of Educational Leadership and superintendent licensure in 2021. In 2022, he took on a new challenge, stepping into the role of executive director of human capital, where he focused on strengthening the district’s workforce and expanding opportunities for educators. In this role, he spearheaded initiatives to reduce teacher vacancies and create pathways for teacher assistants to become fully certified educators. Most recently, on March 13, 2025, he completed The North Carolina Aspiring Superintendent Program, sponsored by the North Carolina School Superintendents Association and Curriculum Associates, further preparing him for this next chapter in leadership.
Beyond his administrative roles, Dr. McNeill has been widely recognized for his contributions to education. He has been honored as a Teacher of the Year, Assistant Principal of the Year nominee, District Principal of the Year, and, in 2017, was inducted into the East Carolina University College of Education Hall of Fame. His dedication to innovation and collaboration was also evident earlier this year when a grant he co-authored with Ms. Jada Mumford was awarded to Greene County Schools, paving the way for implementing Advanced Teacher Roles in the 2025-2026 school year.
When asked about the accomplishment he is most proud of in his career, Dr. McNeill said, “It’s twofold. At the school level, I have had the privilege of impacting thousands of lives positively throughout my career. I still hear from former students about the great things they are doing, whether it’s an academic pursuit or buying their first home. It’s great to have played a small role in that success. From the central office perspective, I am most proud of the work we’ve been able to do to reduce vacancies and promote teacher assistants to teaching positions within our district. This work has been so rewarding and will pay off for years to come.”
Upon his appointment as the next superintendent, Dr. McNeill expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for the opportunity ahead. “I am beyond humbled. I am grateful to the board of education for instilling their trust in me. There are too many people to thank. You don’t get to this point in your career alone. I have had a lot of great people to help me learn and grow along the way. I have a great team of educators and leaders around me, and I will continue to lean on their expertise to help move Greene County Schools forward.”
