Tornado Watch issued for Lenoir, Greene, and Jones Wednesday

A strong cold front is expected to move through eastern North Carolina this afternoon and evening, bringing the potential for damaging winds, isolated tornadoes, and hazardous marine conditions.

Key Hazards:

  • Severe Thunderstorms: Wind gusts over 60 mph and a risk of isolated tornadoes.

  • Strong Winds: Hazardous conditions even outside of storms.

  • Coastal Flooding: Increased water levels along the sound-side Outer Banks from Wednesday night into Thursday.

  • Hazardous Seas: Risk of beach erosion and localized overwash in vulnerable areas.

  • Heavy Rainfall: Storm totals between 0.5 to 1.5 inches may cause reduced visibility and minor ponding on roads.

Residents and mariners should stay alert and take precautions as conditions change. This is the final briefing from the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City.
