Greene County Schools Honors County Teacher of the Year

By Matt Lococo

Snow Hill, NC— On April 14, 2025, Greene County Schools is proud to recognize Heather Davis from Greene Early College, one of its most dedicated and passionate educators, as this year’s Greene County Schools Teacher of the Year. Dr. Rodney McNeil, Executive Director of Human Capital and incoming Superintendent, along with Dr. Taylor Moore, Principal of Greene Early College, had the privilege of announcing this year's winner with a visit to her classroom. With 26 years in the classroom, 16 of them at Greene Early College (GEC), Davis is a veteran math teacher who has left an indelible mark on countless students through both instruction and inspiration.

A proud graduate of East Carolina University, she earned her Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) in Secondary Mathematics. Her love for numbers is rivaled only by her love for her students. “I love math and the relationships I’m able to develop with students,” she shared. “I enjoy providing opportunities—both in and outside of the classroom—that students might not have otherwise had.”

Her journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. “During my first eight years of teaching, I worked under six different principals. That lack of consistency was tough,” she reflected. “But I realized that while administrators may come and go, the real foundation of a successful teaching career is the relationships you build—with students and with colleagues.”

Her guiding wisdom to others is simple but powerful: “Don’t let the bad days get the best of you, and don’t be afraid to try something new.”

Outside the classroom, she’s been married to her husband, Scott for 25 years. They have two children—Tyson, a recent ECU nursing graduate, and Morgan, a junior at Greene Central—as well as four beloved dogs. When she’s not teaching or grading papers, she enjoys cooking and spending quality time with her family.

Greene County Schools congratulates her on this well-deserved honor and thanks her for her unwavering commitment to students and to the profession. Her legacy is one of perseverance, passion, and purpose. Mrs. Davis will be recognized at the return-to-school convocation in August and will deliver a welcome address to the GCS staff. She goes on to compete for the Southeast Region’s Teacher of the Year with an interview in the upcoming weeks. The teacher of the year is part of the Burroughs Wellcome State Teacher of the Year program.
