Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy available at renovated UNC Health Lenoir Wound and Infusion Center
UNC Health Lenoir is proud to announce the opening of the new state of the art UNC Health Lenoir Wound and Infusion Center. This unit specializes in advanced wound care and infusion services. Wound therapy has been available in the hospital since 2016 but the hospital has recently expanded to include hyperbaric oxygen therapy. This new, advanced therapy was made possible by the Lenoir Hospital Foundation with a $55,345 grant which helped purchase two hyperbaric oxygen chambers, complete the required renovations, and fund the hiring of highly trained, specialized staff.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) helps the body’s oxygen dependent, wound healing mechanisms function more effectively. This therapy is indicated for a patient with a wound that has not begun to heal in two weeks or is not completely healed in six weeks. Some commonly treated wounds include diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, venous insufficiency, traumatic wounds, surgical wounds, and burns.
In addition to wound therapy, the center specializes in medical infusions. Infusion services offered include blood products, implanted ports for venous access, chemo and immunotherapies, fluid replacement, injections, and intravenous antibiotic therapy.
Dr. Jamie Serrano, General Surgeon with UNC Surgical Specialists at Lenoir serves as Medical Director of the Wound and Infusion Center. Dr. Serrano has extensive experience in wound care along with Nurse Practitioners Claire Eloshway and Keiva Sandlin. Dr. Serrano states “With the high diabetic population in Eastern NC and the increased incidence of chronic, non-healing wounds, Hyperbaric Therapy is a valuable tool for our patient population. In addition, the unit provides infusion services ranging from disease specific drug therapy to blood transfusions. We are proud to offer these much-needed services at UNC Health Lenoir.”
