At the 43rd Annual BBQ Fest on the Neuse, amidst the savory aroma of smoked meats and the lively atmosphere of festivities, the BBQ Fest on the Neuse team took a moment to recognize a longstanding supporter and local philanthropist, Stephen Hill.
At the annual BBQ Fest on the Neuse, thousands of people strolled the streets of downtown Kinston lined with almost two hundred vendors from all over. After a night storm interrupted the festivities, throngs of people returned for their first taste of the staple eastern North Carolina is known for, BBQ. As is tradition with the BBQ Fest on the Neuse, Kinston Mayor Dontario Hardy gave ceremonial keys to the city to worthy recipients on the Herritage Street stage. The recipients were: Robert L. Brown, Jan Parson, Anna Bell Car, and Joe Hargitt.
The BBQ Fest on the Neuse is back and even the governor has noticed. The annual festival held in Kinston is home to one of the world's largest whole hog cook-offs and everyone who missed last year’s festival because of COVID is ready to come out and enjoy the flavorful North Carolina staple. The BBQ Fest on the Neuse is being held on Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8.
After being canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a permit request was put before the city council on Tuesday for a scaled down event. With vaccination numbers rising, the question of whether or not the council would allow an event that has been known to draw thousands to operate downtown was placed in the agenda. The festival is from May 7-8.

In 2020, the COVID pandemic forced the BBQ Festival to be canceled. This year, the BBQ festival hopes to carry while being stewards of the community with pandemic safeguards in place. On May 7-8, 2021 the BBQ Fest on the Neuse will return.
BBQ Fest Committee Chair Waylon Adams announced the decision this afternoon. Adams said, “With the health and safety of our eastern North Carolina community top of our minds, combined with the guidelines of local, state and national health professionals, the BBQ Festival on the Neuse Board has decided to cancel the 2020 BBQ Festival on the Neuse due to the Coronavirus threat.”
Jan Parson will become the new Kinston-Lenoir County Travel and Tourism Development Authority executive director effective Jan. 1.
Visitor spending increased by 5.2 percent between 2017 and 2018 in the county, going up to $93.48 million.
