Scott Alston has been promoted to the position of Kinston-Lenoir County Recreation Director after 20 years of service with the City of Kinston. During his tenure, Alston has held various roles, including Recreation Superintendent and Interim Parks & Rec Director. He graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Administration and is an alumnus of North Lenoir High School, class of 1998. Alston recently achieved his 100th career win as the tennis coach at North Lenoir High School.
The City of Kinston and Lenoir County are saying goodbye to its Parks and Recreation Director, Corey Povar, who announced his resignation after four and a half years in the role. Povar has accepted a position as Assistant Parks and Recreation Director in the City of Chandler, Arizona.
Greene Central hosts the annual baseball camp. This camp is put on through Greene County Parks and Recreation Department and Greene Central has hosted this camp for over 40 years. This four-day camp is open for kids aged 5-13 and it covers the fundamentals of baseball. Hitting, throwing, catching, baserunning, and position play were all covered during this camp.
Local chiropractic offices have donated several first aid kits to the Kinston/Lenoir County Parks and Recreation department.
Governor Roy Cooper announced recently that the N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund has awarded nearly $5 million in grants to fund 16 local parks and recreation projects across the state. Hookerton Community Park is expected to receive $195,400 for improvements.
According to the Kinston-Lenoir County Parks and Recreation, “The 2020 Freedom Classic series at Historic Grainger Stadium has been canceled due to weather/field conditions! Series games will be played in Annapolis.”
Lovit Hines park now hosts HSE classes, formerly known as GED classes, all year long through a partnership between Kinston-Lenoir County Parks and Rec and Lenoir Community College. The two organizations hosted a block party to kick off this incredible educational opportunity.
Lenoir Community College hosted a pop-up block party Wednesday at Lovit Hines Community Center on King Street to announce their educational partnership with the Lenoir County Parks and Recreation Department.
After 85 years, Emma Webb pool closed in 2018. It would have cost about $600,000 to put a new liner and upgrade the pool. The initial plan was to replace the pool, but the cost has kept it in a state of waiting. The City of Kinston has applied for a PARTF grant to help reopen Emma Webb.
The pool at the Holloway Recreation Center will open Saturday at 2 p.m. for the public and will be accessible until 5 p.m. Open swim is free from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day and the pool will be open until mid-August.
Players and staff from the Down East Wood Ducks will give a local park a facelift next Tuesday.
