The Governor's Crime Commission on Sept. 5 voted to approve $3.5 million for grants to provide violence intervention programs. Commissioners also discussed critical challenges facing the state’s crime victim service providers and law enforcement agencies.
Amazon’s local Kinston plant and Lenoir/Greene United Way teamed up to donate personal care products to three local shelters. Donations of men’s and women’s undergarments, toiletries, socks and cleansing wipes were given to Greene County Interfaith in Snow Hill, SAFE and the Friends of the Homeless shelter…a donation valued at over $1,000.

Local restaurants are working with SAFE to generate funds for fighting domestic violence. During the week of Oct. 18 through Oct. 24, these restaurants will be displaying table tents that include information about SAFE and a QR code to allow patrons to make donations to our local domestic violence prevention program.
SAFE was established in 1985. In March 1986, the first SAFE shelter opened its doors. SAFE answers approximately 850 hotline phone calls and referrals each year. From 1985 through 2015, SAFE provided 34,700 nights of shelter to more than 3,750 victims of domestic violence.
SAFE of Lenoir and Greene County is hosting a BINGO night fundraiser on Thursday, Oct. 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at The Exchange at 121 West Gordon Street in Kinston. Bingo players will have the chance to win gift baskets, jewelry, college football tickets and other prizes.
