Salute! and G.I. Joe’s Living History Museum are turning the November 11 Veterans Day into Veterans Week with events running from Friday, November 3, through Sunday, November 12.
SALUTE, the non-profit organization that runs the GI Joe Living History Museum and the Walk of Honor, began with an idea. The idea was to honor the veterans of Lenoir County for their sacrifices in defending the freedoms of America’s people.
Representative Greg Murphy of the third Congressional District visited the G. I. Joe Museum on Hwy 11 last Friday. He came to Kinston to pay his respects to local veterans and speak about current issues facing them.
If my calculations are correct, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Salute! tribute to American veterans. The first column I wrote about this celebration of American service personnel appeared on Nov. 11, 2002. The context makes clear that the 2002 celebration was not the first.
As with everything else affected by the COVID pandemic, the annual Salute! festivities have been modified to allow us to honor veterans while practicing behaviors that help prevent the spread of the virus.
The 19th Annual SALUTE! Pre-Veterans Day celebration is changing things up a bit. They're inviting the public to join them in the parade on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 11 am on Herritage Street. It's free to participate and anyone and any Veteran can show up by 10:30 am at the Hardees at the corner of Vernon and Herritage Street and be a part of the parade.
The annual Salute! program held each year around Veteran's Day in Kinston has made a few changes for this year. The annual festivities to honor veterans a bit early will commence Friday.
