Snow HIll - On Friday, April 25, 2024, Greene County hosted the annual Special Olympics at the Athletic Complex of Greene Central High School. This year Greene County hosted 74 Athletes and 22 Young Athletes. The event has been held for over 30 years and each year the success of the athletes are celebrated by a multitude of people.
The Lenoir County Special Olympics took place at Kinston High School on Friday, following a reschedule due to inclement weather.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) for Special Olympics is the largest year-round public awareness and grass-roots fundraising campaign for Special Olympics. Known as Guardians of the Flame, law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes carry the Flame of Hope into the Opening Ceremony of local competitions, and into Special Olympics State, National, Regional and World Games.
Greene County Schools and the Greene County Parks and Recreation Department recently hosted the first Special Olympics in Greene County since 2019. According to Co-Chair and GCS EC Transition Coordinator Holly Aycock, “I'm not sure how many years we have participated. However, I have been here for 26 years, so I know it's been that long.”
