Perry Lychak came from Canada to Kinston to play baseball and stayed on to become a teacher and coach and become beloved. Woodington Middle School has acknowledged that mutual affection by dedicating its baseball field as a memorial to the pitcher who found home here.

If there was a thread running through Wednesday’s LCPS Middle School Battle of the Books and the LCPS High School Battle of the Books – in addition to the dozens of students who like to read and who can remember what they read – that thread was Woodington Middle School.
Lenoir County Sheriff Jackie Rogers and the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office have started a new program called “You’ve Been Caught Doing Good.” The sheriff presents awards to middle school students who have been recommended by their teachers and school staff for going above and beyond to help others and to foster a positive environment.
After winning the annual LCPS Spelling Bee for the past four years with champion spellers who eventually aged out, Woodington found a capable successor in Nikki Bellamy. The seventh grader outlasted the top spellers from the district’s elementary and middle schools on Thursday night to claim a fifth consecutive title for her school.

In 2019, Joshua Stroud of Woodington Middle School embarked on a mission inspired by a fellow young philanthropist he saw on television. Witnessing a peer organizing Thanksgiving food drives, Stroud was inspired to make a similar impact in his community.
Woodington Middle School, in collaboration with the local community, is set to host a Celebration of Life event in memory of Perry Lychak, a renowned baseball player and local coach. The event will take place this Saturday at 11:00 AM in the school gym, with a reception to follow.
The Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office has obtained warrants for the arrest of Kegan Van Damke of Lewisville in regards to the break-in reported at Woodington Middle School. Damke has not yet been taken into custody. Woodington Middle School picked up its second consecutive win and Kinston High School scored a revenge victory as LCPS middle schools and high schools squared off in back-to-back Battle of the Books contests on Friday.

Jessica Jones, an agriculture education teacher at Woodington Middle School, is ready to do more with her students in the coming school year after completing a nine-day professional development institute at NC State University to teach the Food Science and Safety Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) course.
