Transformation begins at Emma Webb Park groundbreaking ceremony

A groundbreaking ceremony took place today at Emma Webb Park in Kinston to mark the commencement of a long-awaited major renovation project. The event was attended by city officials, community members, and representatives from various organizations involved in the initiative.

The project, which has been in the planning stages for several years, is set to transform Emma Webb Park into a modern and vibrant community space. The park's revitalization is being spearheaded by the city's Parks and Recreation Department, with the leadership of Corey Povar, the Parks and Recreation Director.

During the ceremony, Povar expressed gratitude to the Parks and Recreation team for their efforts behind the scenes and highlighted the significant contributions of Harold Sutton, the Park Superintendent.

“The star MVP of this project thus far is Harold Sutton. He's our park Superintendent,” said Povar. “I lean on him for projects like this.”

Povar underscored the importance of having a dedicated team that supports the realization of such projects and thanked the various individuals, organizations, and officials who have played a role in making the renovation possible.

The renovation plan includes a range of enhancements that will make Emma Webb Park a more versatile and engaging space for residents of all ages. These improvements encompass a new playground, an outdoor amphitheater stage, basketball courts, and a state-of-the-art splash pad. The project also involves flood mitigation measures, demonstrating a commitment to the safety and well-being of the community.

“We’re already excited,” said Sue Ellen Maddux, Parks and Recreation Commission Chair. “It’s a fun time anytime we get to do something new at Parks and Rec.”

The history and memories associated with Emma Webb Park were integral to the renovation planning process. A thorough community engagement effort was undertaken, including door-to-door outreach by Kinston Teens, community events, and collaborative meetings with the Parks and Recreation Commission. This approach aimed to ensure that the renovated park honors its heritage while also addressing the needs and desires of the current community.

Funding for the renovation project came from multiple sources, including a $500,000 grant from the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund. The City Council and community leaders also invested in the project, bringing the total funding to $1 million. The project's completion is anticipated by October 2024.

“It’s a privilege to have this opportunity to come out this afternoon to partake in this gracious occasion,” said Mayor Pro Tem Antonio Hardy. “I thank the commissioners for coming out, all our elected officials, and the people that put all the work into this project.”

As the renovation progresses, Emma Webb Park is expected to evolve into a dynamic hub for recreational activities, community events, and shared experiences, contributing to the continued growth and vitality of Kinston and its residents.
