Kinston-Lenoir County Parks and Recreation Director Corey Povar spoke at Tuesday’s City Council meeting to discuss the plans for reopening the Kinston Community Center and other recreational facilities. Governor Cooper announced North Carolina moved into phases 2.5 on Friday, September 4.

The Down East Wood Ducks will host a Youth Softball Camp, presented by Stallings Plumbing, Heating and A/C, on Monday, August 31st through Wednesday, September 2nd.
“The Shockers” Girls 8U Travel Softball Team from Kinston, NC competed in the “20/20 NC USSS Hit & Run Greenville” tournament on Friday, July 17th. The girls were promised they could shave the head of one their coaches, Jamie Jernigan, if they won their first championship.
The Down East Wood Ducks will host the inaugural Kinston Cornhole Classic, presented by Poole Realty on Saturday, November 7th. The one-day event is open to two-person teams and will be divided into two divisions: Advanced and Social. The top three teams in each division will walk away with a cash prize. Advanced teams will be playing for a $1,000 first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place prize. The Social teams (no professional players) will be playing for $100 first place, $60 for second place, and $40 for third place prize.
“At his press conference on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, Governor Roy Cooper and his health team extended Phase Two of the state’s reopening plan until at least September 11. Unfortunately, this announcement means that the start of sports for the 2020-2021 school year will be delayed beyond September 1 for NCHSAA member schools.”
Patrick Holmes, LCPS Public Information, Officer said, “Athletics are suspended indefinitely as a result of plans to reopen school with virtual instruction and related current guidance from NCHSAA.”

The North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association announced start dates for fall sports, with a staggered plan to return to play. This decision affects Arendell Parrott Academy and Bethel Christian Academy.
The Down East Wood Ducks will host a Youth Baseball Camp, presented by Farmer-N-Dell Learning Center, on Monday, July 27 for youth ages 7-13 years old. Instructors for the camp include coaches from the Down East Wood Ducks, University of Mount Olive, North Lenoir and South Lenoir.
On Wednesday, July 8, at 11:00 am, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) held a zoom meeting with Commissioner Que Tucker to discuss what could be happening with sports for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year. Although no major announcements were made, it is clear that unless conditions are well enough for athletes to be in the classroom, they will be holding off on their return to the field or court. Tucker stated, “Education comes first. Athletics is an extension of the classroom.”
Minor League Baseball announced the cancellation of the 2020 season on Tuesday, spelling the end for hopes of baseball in Kinston in 2020.
In keeping with Governor Roy Cooper’s announcement today that the public schools of North Carolina will be closed to in-person learning for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) has canceled all remaining winter championships and spring sports.

North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Commissioner Que Tucker released the following statement, “Having heard the updated information relative to schools remaining closed until the middle of May, NCHSAA interscholastic athletics will remain suspended until at least May 18.”
