Arthur Hope Shackelford, 87, formerly of Kinston, died peacefully on October 2, 2022, in Tarboro. While he began his career in journalism and communications for the Goldsboro News Argus and then the N. C. Bankers Association, he built his career in retail sales as owner of Canady’s and later at JCPenney in Kinston. For many years, he was an active member of the Kinston Rotary Club where he led the music, was a past president, and was a Paul Harris Fellow.
According to the Greene County Sheriff's Office, this morning around 7:15am SRO Deputy Frushica Best was involved in a vehicle accident. The accident occurred on Highway 258 N between Newell Road and 903 North.
This year Greene Early College celebrates a ten-year contractual agreement with NC Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway Program. To celebrate the commitment, over 40 very willing students combed the shoulders and ditches on Middle School Road on Friday September 23 to collect litter.
October 15 will be a jam-packed. The day begins with “Breakfast on the Boat” at the CSS Neuse II in cooperation with the Ironclad Races Half-Marathon and 5K runs. The half marathon starts at 7:30 a.m. The 5k starts at 7:45 a.m. Breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. until around 10:30 a.m.

Fair attendees can "Lend A Helping Hand" by donating items such as non-perishable foods items, hygiene products, and paper products, such as toilet paper, paper towels, paper plates, cups, etc. Although food is of utmost importance the need for hygiene and paper products is important too. Folks will be able to drop them in the designated area before they enter the midway.

Unemployment rates (not seasonally adjusted) increased in 98 of North Carolina’s counties in August and remained unchanged in two. Edgecombe County had the highest unemployment rate at 7.9 percent while Buncombe, Swain, and Chatham Counties each had the lowest at 3.1 percent. All fifteen of the state’s metro areas experienced rate increases.
“I am sick and tired of elections,” he said. “Mostly, I am tired of all the arguing and nobody really helping us out, just themselves. I don’t trust any of them.”

Seven Springs - Lannie Nell Harper Smith, 89, passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 2022. A service of love and remembrance will be held on Sunday, October 2, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends in the hour prior to the service. Committal will follow at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church Cemetery.
A short section of U.S. 258 near the Lenoir-Jones county line is scheduled to close next week for drainage improvements.
