Mike Parker: Franklin’s words still resonate

On Monday, September 17, 1787, Benjamin Franklin rose to address the delegates to the Constitutional Convention. The fledgling states of our new nation had sent representatives to rewrite America’s first attempt at national government, the Articles of Confederation. Soon the delegates trying to tweak the Articles realized the document created a form of government that would not work.

Obituary: Philip Michael Decker

Philip Michael Decker, age 70, of Kinston, NC passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Community Funeral Home, 840 West Main Street, Beulaville, NC 28518. A celebration of Phil’s life will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Community Funeral Home in Beulaville with Rev. Greg Kincaid officiating. Interment will follow at East Duplin Memorial Gardens.

Dr. Hanan Shaker Kirollos, 58 of Kinston North Carolina passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at UNC Health Lenoir. A private funeral service will be held at St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church in Raleigh on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 11:30 AM. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2023 at 2 PM at Bethel Free Will Baptist Church in Kinston.

KPD investigating murder

Officers arrived on scene a located a 16 y/o male juvenile that had succumbed to injuries received as the result of a gun shot wound. At this time, the information of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of family members.

LCSO's Narcotics Unit arrest man on drug charges in Lenoir County

Detectives with the narcotics unit of the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office arrested Kinston resident, Raeford Gerald Quinn, on Friday for drug charges and an outstanding warrant for possession of methamphetamine. During a search of his residence, Quinn was found in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia and was subsequently processed for the warrant and received new charges.
