Pursuant to G.S. 115C-518 and 160A-269, the Lenoir County Board of Education hereby gives notice that it has received an offer to purchase the Teacher’s Memorial School property owned by the Lenoir County Board of Education.  The property’s street address is 500 Marcella Drive Kinston, NC 28501. The offer to purchase is in the amount of One Hundred and Twenty Thousand Dollars ($120,000.00). Notice is hereby given that prior to August 28,2023, at 4:00 PM, any person may raise the bid by not less than ten percent (10%) of the first one thousand dollars ($1,000) and five percent (5%) of the remainder ($119,000).  Therefore, the lowest acceptable upset bid is One Hundred Twenty-Six Thousand Fifty Dollars ($126,050.00).

Cooking with Tammy Kelly: Bee Friendly, Celebrate National Honeybee Day

National Honey Bee Day, the third Saturday in August, was started in 2009, when a small group of beekeepers petitioned for and obtained a formal proclamation from the USDA honoring honeybees and beekeeping. The purpose of the celebration is to bring together beekeepers, bee associations, and other interested groups to connect with the communities to advance beekeeping, using a united effort one day a year. What better way to celebrate the honorable honeybee than to enjoy their delicious honey!

1st Choice Care Apprenticeship Announcement

Lenoir Community College is excited to announce the first Nurse Aide Apprenticeship that started in July with employees from 1st Choice Care, LLC, a family-owned home healthcare agency in Kinston. 1st Choice Care Director Starsheema Chapman and LCC Associate Dean of Workforce Development Dawn Kantz signed the apprenticeship agreement recently during the Nurse Aide I class at LCC.

Obituary: Stella Smith Willoughby

Stella Smith Willoughby, 94, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, August 15, 2023. A visitation will be Friday, August 18th at 1 pm followed by a homegoing service at 2 pm at the Capital Church in Garner. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, August 19th at 11am in Pinewood Memorial Park, Greenville. She will be available for viewing at Edwards Funeral Home on Thursday from 2 to 4 pm.

Obituary: Gina Thomasine Turner Justice

Gina Thomasine Turner Justice, 66, of Pink Hill, passed away on August 15, 2023, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by loved ones. The family will receive guests on Thursday, August 17th from 6pm to 8pm at the Pink Hill Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 18th at 2pm, with interment to follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park in Pink Hill.

Simultaneous search warrants yield firearms and marijuana recovery

On Tuesday, August 15th, 2023, members of the Kinston Police Department located the suspect and suspect vehicle involved in the shooting of Marquetta Norman on August 10th, 2023.  A traffic stop was subsequently conducted, and detectives were able to apprehend Marquez Johnson, 18, of Kinston for his involvement in the crime.  A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of a Glock 9mm handgun. 

LCC Holds Lamm Building Dedication

Lenoir Community College recently held the dedication of the newly named Lamm Building. The building is named in recognition of William "Bill" Lamm and Melda B. Lamm, longtime supporters of the College. Their lives were dedicated to their faith, family, friends, and community. In light of that, the two were very generous with their work and donations to multiple institutions across the surrounding area.
