Reece Gardner: One day at a time

Reece Gardner: One day at a time

In last week's Column I wrote about the passing of my brother, Rick Gardner, and how the loss of a loved one can be painful to those who remain. But we are in this life "One day at a time," and it is incumbent upon us to cherish each day and be thankful for the opportunity we are given to share our lives with others, particularly members of our families. That opportunity came in our family this past weekend with the gathering of cousins for the annual "Cousins' Reunion", which was held this year right here in Kinston.

To say it was an enjoyable occasion would be an understatement. It was absolutely fantastic. Cousins came from various locations, some of them traveling rather long distances to be a part of this family event.  It was so heartwarming to see real, genuine LOVE on display, both in word as well as in action. The event was hosted by my beautiful Daughter Jessica and was attended by Cousins Dolores Lee, Jennifer Smith, Cathy Arnold, Libby Chadwick, Sherry Meredith, Bonnie Golden-Sikes, Lynn Golden, Yvonne Lee, and Jack Gardner.

Here are some comments by those in attendance:

"It energizes me to be with my cousins.  It is shelter in the storm, and I can't imagine my life without them.  This last year has been so difficult not being able to gather with them.  I have been so excited to get here so we could be together  - so much laughter and so much love!"

"We cherish this time together. There is no judgment. We are so accepted and safe. Being together is like the feeling of a warm, cozy blanket."

"The older I get, the more I know that I am blessed beyond measure for the treasure that my family is. No one else I know has something so beautiful."

"Fun is abundant with my family - stories and lots of laughter."

"The history of our family and what it means to remember our closeness from days gone by, as well as today's and days in the future. Our shared experiences through the years have made bonds of love that is so joyful. The laughter is loud and from the soul."

Folks, it is so important that we hold our families close and let them know we love them. LOVE is the key, and it is eternal. When we reach out the hand of love to our families, we might not realize just how much that means to them. Like these words spoken from one family member to another: If tomorrow never comes and today is all I get, to say  how much you mean to me, and your love I won't forget, I'll be quick to say "I love you, please forgive me, and it's Okay, so that if tomorrow never comes, there'll be NO REGRETS  today!"

So tell your family you love them - AND DO IT TODAY!
